List introduction

The list Iconographie is hosted by Yahoo Groups. The list-owner is Gabriel Bodard and the list is co-administrated by Nina Strawczynski .

When you subscribe you will receive an automated message explaining the operation of the Yahoo Groups system. As a subscriber to the list you may send mail to all other subscribers by addressing your message to < >. Any problems should be brought to the attention of the list owners.

The list Iconographie has been set up to facilitate international discussion in the field of ancient Greek art and iconography. This topic can be defined broadly, but if list discussions veer too far from the brief the owners may on occasion intervene to request that discussion be taken off-list. On the other hand, no question within the list-topic is too stupid or insignificant to be sent to the list (perhaps including requests for other members to examine details on an artefact in their home institution). We hope to make the list available to students of all levels and interested laymen, as well as the most erudite of scholars.

This list is not meant for the discussion of mediaeval or modern Orthodox Christian icons, unless ancient art is particularly relevant to the iconography of an icon. This list may not be used to circulate or advertise financial services or items for sale, including antiquities and reproductions of ancient art.

It is expected that all subscribers will adhere to the rules of Netiquette, good manners and consideration for others: in general it is best not to write to the list if you are simply expressing agreement and not adding anything to the discussion. Please identify yourself with a signature at the end of your mail. The list is currently unmoderated: all subscribers may post directly to the whole group. If the list becomes the target of abuse it may become moderated in the future.

The default languages of the list will be English and French, but postings in Italian, German, Spanish, Greek and other modern languages (within the limits of email fonts) are also welcome.

It is to be expected that the discussion of art and iconography will often require the sharing of images. Nonetheless, please do not send GIF or JPEG files as attachments to the whole list (in any case attachments will be rejected). If necessary, send attachments to individual email addresses, or even better, put the image on a web page and send the http address to the list (I can help with this if desired).

Enjoy the discussions!

Gabriel Bodard

Introduction à la liste

Bonnes discussions!

Nina Strawczynski

Preliminary Bibliography

This bibliography is only a suggestion of preliminary readings. It makes no claims to comprehensiveness, nor implies that these are the best works available on the subject. It should be taken as a starting point for further exploration of the subject. There is an important bibliography of Greek iconography in Beth Cohen ed., Not the Classical Ideal: Athens and the construction of the other, Leiden-Boston-Köln, 2000, pp. 487-521.
